Chapter 16

I called Portia and found Piper upstairs a few minutes later.

“Hola,” I called out to her.

She glanced up from a tablet in her lap and grinned at me. “Good to see this place is already rubbing off on you. Next thing you know you’ll be wearing a sombrero and singing in a Mariachi band.”

“I’m almost tempted to say that you’re using stereotypes for humor, and you should feel bad,” I told her. “But I’d wear the fuck out of a sombrero.”

“You’re taking me to England?” Piper asked.

“Sure am—if you’re up for it.”

“Why me and not someone else?”

“Might need some rapid medic action,” I told her bluntly. “Lot of soft targets who don’t deserve bullets where we’re headed. I trust my people to make it clean, but I have a feeling that the SPED are willing to play dirty if it means saving their own skin.”

A dark look crossed her face. “So, you found them?”

“Sure did. Need a hand carrying some things.”

The team’s healer hopped off the bed and followed me downstairs. Gwen and Giselle were quickly packing duffel bags with rifles, pistols, silencers, and basic tactical gear. We didn’t have the benefit of full webbing, but I wanted to keep Portia fresh for our escape. I had a feeling that we were going to need it. Piper scooped up one of her preferred pistols, clicked on her suit with a twist of a belt buckle, and screwed a suppressor onto the end of her weapon with quick, practiced movements.

“Got everything we need?” I asked Gwen.

She made a face. “Only issues are going to be comms. The whole place feels like it’s under a Faraday cage. We’re not going to be able to talk to you or locate you within the building, so you’re running on the plan and nothing else.”

I nodded, strapped on a tactical vest, then pulled a coat over it.

Paladin glanced at me in surprise. “No suit?”

“Stands out too much,” I told her. “Keep yours. People know you, and they know what you can do. You’re going to be every gunshot victim’s best friend if it comes to that.” I grimaced. “I’ve got a feeling they’ll have anti-supe fields up around the place, though. Which is going to make things difficult.”

“Kill the power first,” Gwen advised me. “It’’ll throw people off, but it should hopefully power down whatever shit they have in there that’s connected to the main grid.”

“Wouldn’t be like them to have generators,” Giselle countered.

Gwen glared at her. “Look, they’ve been sloppy before. Maybe we get lucky.”

“Wouldn’t be the first time,” I allowed, “but we can’t afford to run on luck here.”

Our pretty, British mode of transportation strolled through the front door with a smile on her face and stopped short as I hefted two of the duffel bags over my shoulder. They barely weighed anything with my Ultra-Class Strength enabled.

“We’re taking all of that?”

“I’m not asking you to clear rooms with us,” I told her. “Just need you for the entry and the exfil. We’ll take care of the rest on our own.
